How to make sure your car is ready for winter

Does your car need a winter checkup?

Here in BC, we are lucky to have mild winters with mostly rain and rare occasional below zero. But once in a while, the BC winter likes to throw an icy curveball of freezing rain, black icy roads and the most surprising of all – large amounts of snow. We’ll leave aside national jokes about how Vancouverites are so helpless against what it seems like a regular winter day for a fellow Albertan and get to the bottom of it – how to avoid being stuck in the middle of the road just because your car is simply not prepared for winter.

Below is our checklist on how to prep best for the season, so you are ready for the unexpected.

  1. Winter tires

The most common question is if you need to opt for winter tires when you have brand new tires with great treads. A lot of people don’t like the idea of signing up for new winter tires, especially if you live in the mild winter climate.  But most auto repair shops recommend the transition when the temperature drops below 7C and before the first snowfall. Lack of snow doesn’t mean there’s no need for winter tires – icy roads are every driver’s nightmare and it’s better at times to indulge in preventative maintenance than an expensive bill from an auto repair shop.

Don’t wait for too long, mid-November should be your latest option. If you want to have more info on this subject, stop by and talk to our car mechanic at our Richmond auto repair shop. Our car technicians have an average of 20+ years of experience so we can answer all of your car service questions ranging from mechanical repairs, oil changes, transmission service, brake fluid service, engine diagnostic, coolant flushes, steering repairs, winter checkup and  winter tires.

  1. Important Automotive fluids

The oil in your car becomes dirty with time, and it makes your vehicle work twice as hard. During cold months, your auto needs a thinner oil to operate effectively. Thicker oils can potentially cause damage to your engine because the oil pump will need to work harder.

Anti-freeze is another important automotive fluid that keeps your engine’s cooling system intact. In colder temperatures, this system is more vulnerable, and by adding antifreeze, you can save your car from some serious radiator damage.

To avoid your windshield fluid freezing to your windshield, make sure that the wiper fluid reservoir has two blends throughout the year: a summer blend and a winter blend.

  1. Four B’s – Brakes, Belts, Blades and Battery

You don’t need to ask your car mechanic to know that these parts are crucial not only to the proper functioning of your car but to the safety of the driver and passengers. And the stakes are even higher during winter months when you’re operating on snow and ice. Proper functioning of wiper blades ensures clear visibility, brakes have to be in top shape and your battery needs to be in good condition to get your vehicle running in the cold months.

  1. Air conditioning and exhaust systems

Pro-tip from our Mechanic: don’t forget to check your air conditioning and exhaust systems!

A lot of drivers tend to overlook the importance of proper functioning air a/c during winter; however, it is a crucial mechanism in defrosting and dehumidifying your car. And while you’re at it – your exhaust system has to be in top shape to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

As you can see, winter prep is a serious endeavour, and if you’re feeling overwhelmed – give us a call and book an appointment with our team.
